Bright Red Rashes, Swelling On Feet, Ankle. On Elevation Reduces. Had Peri-orbital Cellulitis. Seems To Be Healing. Suggestions?

I have a bright red rash like spot on both legs above the ankle. I also have swelling in both my feet and ankles that goes down once I elevate my feet but comes right back once I get back on them. I was on vacation and have been doing a lot of walking when it showed up. I am not on any blood pressure medicine and have always had good blood pressure. I have had peri-orbital cellulitis for 3 weeks now and seems to be healing. Can you help?

Hello,

thanks for posting on HCM,

From your description, you might be suffering from venous insufficiency. Swelling of the ankles and feet is often an early symptom of venous insufficiency, a condition in which blood inadequately moves up the veins from the legs and feet up to the heart. Normally, the veins keep blood flowing upward with one-way valves. When these valves become damaged or weakened, the blood leaks back down the vessels and fluid is retained in the soft tissue of the lower legs, especially the ankles and feet. Chronic venous insufficiency can lead to skin changes, skin ulcers, and infection. Other conditions that may lead to ankle/feet swelling is lymphedema, pregnancy, ankle injury, heart failure etc. How ever, you will need to speak to your doctor so he can do a proper evaluation and determine the correct cause.
Treatment involves using a gradient compression stockings that provide 30-40 or 40-50 mm Hg of compression at the ankle, with gradually decreasing compression at more proximal levels of the leg. You will need to get a script for that by a physician.

Hope this helps and wish you the best
