Any Possiblity Of Miscarriage Or Any Harm If Body Massage Is Done In Pregnancy Of 7 Weeks?

Hello, I am a massage therapist in Georgia, and I just had a client come in who was 7 weeks pregnant. I politely refused the massage making sure to explain to her that there were several liability issues, including the possibility of miscarriage in her 1st trimester. Was I correct in telling her this? She also told me that she had done this (had a massage) before when pregnant, and didn't understand why I wouldn't perform the massage. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks--

Hello, I would be happy to help you with your question.

The chance of miscarriage at 7 weeks is as high as 15%. A massage is not associated with an increased risk of miscarriage. If you routinely perform massages on first trimester pregnancies, eventually someone is going to miscarry and there will be an inherent connection to the massage. One thought is to just defer any massages until after 14 weeks, when the chance of miscarriage is well below 5%.

I hope that this helps and good luck!

Hi, Thanks for using HCM.

Massage during pregnancy is not contraindicated, but you should not massage in abdomen, peri genital area and inner thighs as there may be chance of miscarriage and spreading infection. Other area no problem. Hope I answered your question. Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries.
Wish you good health. Take care.

Regards
Dr. Lohit
