Dear Mrs Sushama Adavi I am sorry to know your husband is suffering from bad ankle pain. The gout is a condition where recurrent attacks of inflamatory occurs along with hot and tender joints mostly great toe (1st metatarso-phalangial joint) but other joints are also involved like knee, ankle, also joints of the hands (metacarpo-phallangial joints.) It comes often with high tempareture. This happens due to high level of uric acid in the blood. It could be hereditary,Diet eg meat, sea-food, Alcohol, artificial sweetner, but main reason(90%) is caused by under excretion of uric acid by the kidney. Some drugs can increase the level of uric acid in the blood eg Aspirin, Neacin, high dose of Hydroclorothiazide. I think you should take your husband to see your Doctor who will send him to Rheumatologist who will do blood test to determine uric acid level, joint fluid examination to see the presence of urate crystals of gout. There other conditions like Septic arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis. Its treatment depends entirely on diagnosis. Kindest regards.
