9 Yr Old Severely Constipated, Complains Of Stomach Pain. Given Miralax, Equate Gentle Laxative. Watery Blood In Stools. Why ?

I had my 9 yr old daughter at the ER yesterday due to stomach cramps and hurting. They did an X-ray and seen she was severely constipated. They recommended miralax. I also picked up an Equate gentle laxative 5mg. Gave her 3. She weighs 130lbs. It relieved the constipation . But last night she called me into the bathroom and there was light red blood in the toilet. The blood was kinda watery and like a woman that pees right when she starts her period. It happened three more times. She disnt have to go this morning so I don t know if it s stopped yet. She went onto school. I told her if it gets worse than last night to call me.

Hi
Thank You for your query
There are a few concerns that need to be addressed
Firstly 130 lbs at 9 yrs age is on the higher side. Encourage your child to exercise, take healthy diet.
Now since she also has constipation i would suggest her to get her thyroid profile. Reduced thyroid function may cause all these symptoms. As for the constipation, she needs to alter her diet. Ask her to refrain from refined/processed foods. Encourage her to take a lot of fluids and roughage (green leafy vegetables, fruits). Ask her to sit in a tub of warm water for 10 to 15 min, 3 to 4 times a day (it is called Sitz bath). It will help her a lot. She may need laxatives at present but gradually that has to taken over by these dietary modifications. Now for the blood in stools. It may just be a fissure (crack) near the anus. Ask her if she has pain during defecation. The same treatment will help her with that too. Hope that helps your query. I wish you good health
