Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
5 Year Child, Had Kidney Stones At 1 Year, Taking Potrate Mb6, Now 5 Year Old. Tablet Duration? Any Side Effects?
My son had kidney stone when he was 1 year old. He was treated with potrate mb6 and also undertook stenting and lithotripsy. The stone was gone. He is 5 years old now and still on potrate, how long should he continue to take potrate? Though there is no recurrence of stones, doc says his calcium levels are quite high, so continue to take potrate and hydride 12.5 mg tablets. How long should he continue with the medication and is there any side effect?
I can understand your concern. However you have not mentioned your son's calcium levels not other biochemical parameters. Potrate is potassium citrate used to treat renal tubular acidosis. It will be better to discuss the status of your son's renal function with the treating doctor before a call can be taken on discontinuation of the salt. There is no harm in taking Potrate for a long time.
I could not find the composition of Hydride and am not able to give any guidance on it.
I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.
