Stuffiness of the nose is part of coryza, or what is commonly known as a common cold. Usually, colds are caused by viruses, of which there are hundreds of different kinds. When a virus invades the nose/pharynx, it causes the internal nose skin to secrete a lot of fluid that is mucusy, thick and tends to block the nose and the associated airways. This makes both breathing and feeding difficult for an infant.

Firstly, use a nasal suction pump (available at big pharmacy counters) to remove the boogers lodged inside the nasal passages. After this, you may instil a few drops of saline-based nose drops with the child's head in your lap and tilted back. Wait for a few seconds for the drops to go in, and then, with the pump, try and remove the drops with the trapped mucus again. In this way, you can keep his nose open. Also, do not use Vicks or similar preparations on his nose. You can apply it to his chest or a little on his cloth-top, so that the vapours reach his nose.

Finally, a temporary relief from a blocked nose can be obtained by simply turning him face down in your lap for a short while.

If the cough is severe, please consult a doctor in person. Otherwise, the above remedies are enough for a simple cold.

Also, she has lot of phlegm in her lungs which I made out from her breathing sounds. Please suggest a remedy for phlegm removal and clear her stuffy nose.

hello. i have no idea if i have a cold or flu or what. i was looking online but they say a cold you would have a runny nose. i do not but my nose is a little plugged [i can still breathe..and i thinks its been like this before..i dont think its allergies because i am not sneezing] i was coughing (it's getting a little better). i do not have a headache or puffy eyes. i started feeling bad (sore throat- it hurt to talk and swollow) maybe on the 19th or 18th [every so often coughing really bad as well] and i have been taking plenty of Airborne. Today my throat does not hurt when i speak (it doesnt hurt when i swollow..it just feels odd) and i have not been coughing as much (maybe 1/2 or 1/4 of what i was coughing like]. Is this a cold or flu or what? and is it contagious [still? how would i know if it was] ? i do not want to get my family sick and i would like to haang out with a friend this weekend.

Hi, I have a problem with my ear. It all started with simple sneezing that made both of my ears itchy inside. The itchiness goes down from my ears (inside) to my throat. Sometimes I feel like my throat is dry and the sides of lips itch too. I've tried consulting an EENT doctor, she said my ear drum was inflammed, so she recommended that I take an anti-histamine tablet. The generic name was Ceterizine. I've been taking that tablet for like 3 weeks now. The itching stops though but I don't think I'm completely healed. What could be the problem? I'm really worried right now that it might be a fungal infection, I don't want fungus/bacterium eat my tissues inside! What do I need to do?
