Just Curious. What Causes A Hangover? What Is The Best
Question: just curious. what causes a hangover? what is the best way to not feel so crappy the next morning? I went out to a business function last night; had a few glasses of wine and a few cocktails over a period of about 4 hours. got home and slept about 5/6 hours and woke up to a full on hangover. I keep water by the bed and dont seem to be dehydrated. urine is clear in color. 63 y o male. I take xanax at night for general anxiety which I dont take when I drink for obvious reasons. ive taken xanax for over 15 years and I never mix with drinking. I will take the next morning when I drink though and that seems to help with the hangover.

Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.
I think it is normal to feel that way the next morning after drinking alcohol.
The alcohol is a habit forming and also causes hangover the next morning like headache, dizziness, drowsiness, stomach ache etc. The causes of hangover are not well known. It has to do with metabolic acidosis, glucose metabolism, dehydration etc.
A lower dosage of alcohol has few hangover symptoms. Sleeping well , rehydration can help ease the symptoms. You can use acetaminophen for headache.
Hope I have answered the question.

Acetaminophen I have been told is a terrible thing to take as an adjunct to alcohol as it can damage the liver. I do take my Xanax which always helps but not until the alcohol has cleared. Wouldn’t ibuprofen be better than Tylenol?
Brief Answer:
You can use Ibuprofen (after some food) for the short term.
Detailed Answer:
I was not saying to take it while having alcohol but probably the morning after during the hangover.
It can damage the liver even if you don't take alcohol causing toxic hepatitis.
You can use Ibuprofen too after some food for the short term.
