When Should The Suboxone Use Be Stopped Before ACL Repair On Knee?

default
Posted on Tue, 13 Jan 2015
Question: Hello. I have a surgery coming up for a torn ACL repair in my right knee. This is my second ACL repair surgery for the same knee. I have been taking Suboxone for about 5 months regularly now at a total of about 2 mgs a day. I am not prescribed Suboxone because I couldn't afford to enter a detox program. I therefore cannot mention to my surgeon that I am taking Suboxone. My question is how many hours before surgery should I go without Suboxone use? Today is 12/17/2014 and my surgery is 12/22/2014 (next Monday). I am 175 pounds at 5 feet 10 inches and have a decently fast metabolism. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
about 7 days before surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

It is not a good idea to take medications without consulting it with your treating doctor.
It is very important for your doctor to be informed about any kind of medication that you are taking. This is even more important if you are going to have a surgery.Your doctor need to know absolutely everything so he can evaluate the risks and manage possible complications.
The idea that you would not disclose this crucial detail would be dangerous and irresponsible.
Regarding your question ,it is recommended that you should stop taking Suboxone a week before surgery,in order to avoid possible interactions with other drugs that can be used during or after surgery like anesthetic drugs, analgesics etc.

If you are still taking Suboxone ,you should stop it right away.
I would strongly suggest to talk about this with your treating doctor.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any other question or doubts to clarify.I will be happy to assist you further.

Kind regards,
Dr.Rovena Murati
