Should I Be Concerned About Occasional Choking Upon Liquids Entering The Wrong Pipe?

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Jun 2022
Question: When drinking liquids, they do on occasion go down the wrong pipe. When this happens, my throat closes off completely and I am not able to get any air in. I can force some air out, but, no air can come in. It is very scary. I assume my throat is spasming. Is it always going to release eventually so I can breath again. or is it possible it will not release. Should I be concerned by this. By the way, I have no insurance. I would say it happens a couple to a few times a year.

A couple of years ago I had a Zenker diverticuli in my throat. A Dr fixed that and also enlarged my esophagus due to narrowing near stomach opening. Just remembered.

Brief Answer:
You are having aspiration.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

By your history and description, possibility of aspiration is more likely. This is commonly seen with diseases affecting swallowing. Mostly it is associated with neurological disease (affecting brain) in which sense of swallowing is hampered. It is also seen with esophageal obstructive pathology like cyst or mass or polyp etc.

Frequency of twice or more in a year is not at all more.
If this happens twice or more in a day then it should be thoroughly evaluated. Bronchodilators maybe needed.

I want to know few more things first.
1. Do you smoke?
2. Do you have any sort of similar problem with solid food? Or it is only with liquid?
3. Do you have constant throat irritation or nausea or gastritis?
4. Do you have weight loss?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better.

I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

Yes, I smoke, but only past 6-7 years.

Occasionally food. The very first time it happened was about 3-4 years ago. I was eating a sweet tart and a small piece went down the wrong pipe and my throat closed off. I thought it was because of the sweet tart causing my throat to spasm. But, then It has happened a few times since then. So, this is fairly new to me.

I have throat irritation like allergy wise. I sometimes get heartburn, but I try to stay away from things that cause that. I use Pepcid Complete when I do have problems. I do burp a lot. My friends are jealous... LOL...
I don't have nausea or gastritis.

No weight loss.

I have had things go down the wrong pipe on occasion all my life, and you cough a lot trying to get it up. This is different in that my airway is completely closed and I am not able to breath at all until it lets up.
The first time it happened I was home alone (I live alone) and I did not know if it was going to release or not. I was wondering to myself if this is how I am going to die. Then it released.
The first time it happened was prior to the throat procedure I had.

I had nodules in my thyroid and they did 2 FNA's and they both came back inconclusive so they took out the right side of my thyroid and it was not cancerous. So I see an Endocrinologist on a regular basis (haven't been for 1 year now though). When I had stuff getting caught in my throat I told him about it and he said it was not my thyroid. He sent me to a gastroenterologist who found the Zenker diverticulum and that was fixed.
The gastroenterologist said my stomach was still full when he did the procedure even though I had not eaten for at least 14 hours. He said that is not normal. I have not had any problems so I have not seen a DR for this. I have no job or insurance currently.

My throat has not closed off for a while now, but I am wondering if I should be concerned about it, or it will usually just release on it's own?

Just FYI. I have had my gallbladder removed, right side of thyroid removed,
The procedure on my Zenker diverticulum, and right shoulder rotator cuff, 2 tears, impingement, & frozen shoulder (all at the same time). Can't think of anything else.

Thank you, XXXXXXX Hilsabeck

Brief Answer:
Possibility of GERD is more likely.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

By your history and description, possibility of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is more likely.
GERD is due to laxity of gastroesophageal sphincter. Because of this, the acid of the stomach tends to come up in the esophagus and cause nausea, gastritis, bloating (abdominal fullness), burping etc.

Uncontrolled GERD can also cause aspiration.
So in my opinion, you should definitely consult gastroenterologist and get done upper GI (gastrointestinal) scopy for the diagnosis of GERD.
Smokers are more prone for GERD.
So you should quit smoking as soon as possible.
Please let me know
1. Have you ever undergone upper GI scopy?
2. Are you taking any antacid like pantoprazole?
3. Do you want to quit smoking?

Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

I am not sure if I have had an upper GI Scopy. I know I had a scope stuck down my throat into my stomach, but, I can not remember why. It was a while back.

The only thing I take for heartburn is Pepcid Complete. I don't take it all that often anymore as I try not to eat things that cause it.

I know smoking is stupid, but, I do not currently want to stop.

Thanks for your concern.

I really just want to know if it is possible for my throat to close up where I can't breath and not release, hence me suffocating to death.

Brief Answer:
Consult gastroenterologist and get done upper GI endoscope.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

In my opinion, you should first quit smoking.

Secondly, I'd suggest consulting a gastroenterologist and get done upper GI endoscopy to rule out GERD.

Hope I have solved your query. Wish you good health.
Thanks.
