What The Adverse Effects Of Taking Oxandrolone Treatment During Puberty?

default
Posted on Wed, 12 Aug 2015
Question: Dear Doctor,

When i was a teen start of puberty, i had some oxandrolone treatment to boost my height. I was told there are no side effects.

But then i discovered oxandrolone is a weak derivative of testosterone. So its possible it reacted with other parts of my body and not just long bones ( to boost the height)

Lets suppose it did play a role in increasing size of my larynx cartilage. I read somewhere cartilage collagen turnover is long lived ( 300 years) . Other places suggest collagen turns over every few months.

A few months turnover would make me happy, as it means any effect from the oxandrolone has long been gone and replaced by new collagen. Or is this not correct? Which is correct?

Please advise

Best Regards

Brief Answer:
Few months -during puberty.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The larynx cartilage turnover in humans usually varies from few months to 1-2 years. Its turnover varies with the age of the person. As the person ages the turnover may slow down. At puberty it is not likely to be more than few months. So, you need not worry. The effect would have long gone by now.
I hope this answers your query.

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX

Thanks for your valued reply.

Does rate of 1-2 years apply to all the components of the larynx cartilage ie collagen type 2 also?

By any chance, is there link or source so i can read also?

Wishing you all the best

Brief Answer:
Applies to all components of cartilage.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
There are no specific studies done that can detect the effect of steroids on each type of cell. The time span of 1-2 years is an expert opinion and it generally applies to all the components of cartilage. I do not have any specific studies available online for reference.
Hope my answer is helpful.
