What Is The Cause And Treatment For Reduced Bone Density?

default
Posted on Sat, 18 Oct 2014
Question: I am interested in understanding the apparent risks for osteoporosis on the attached report from my wife's gynecologist. Although the report indicates a "normal" study, it indicates some percentage of reduced bone density and a small 10-year risk based on that. How significant is this bone density reduction since 2011 and how worrisome is it in relation to the suggested risks for the next 10 year period? My wife's gynecologist also said she wanted to know results of my wife's upcoming colonoscopy, but why would her gynecologist need to know that?

Brief Answer:
NORMAL REPORT. VERY LOW RISK IN 10 YEARS.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments:

1) Present report (DEXA) is almost NORMAL. You must know that bone density will DECREASE gradually with increasing age after menopause. Therefore, there is slight RISK in fracture due to osteoporosis in next 10 years.

2) It is advisable to undergo DEXA scan periodically (2 years interval) and start to take CALCIUM supplement with BISPHOSPHONATE to minimize the RISK in the future. Kindly, procure complete prescription from your doctor.

3) Colonoscopy may rule out underlying CAUSES related to poor absorption of CALCIUM or other minerals. It should be corrected according to report.

Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish her good health and take care yourself.

Regards,
Dr S Patra

Thank you kindly, Dr. Patra. What would be found in a colonoscopy that would suggest reduced absorption of calcium? I thought that colonoscopies mainly look for polyps and cancer.Posted By : Davic1
My wife is also supposed to use a syringe to apply estradiol cream for 7 seven days, then 5 days. But she forgot to do it consistently at the correct intervals. Should she start all over, or just continue where she left off?

Brief Answer:
DETAILS ARE GIVEN BELOW.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for follow up queries.

1) Colonoscopy can detect Inflammatory bowel disease, Diverticulosis etc besides Polyp and Cancer which can interfere with Calcium re-absorption to some extent.

2) Estrogen supplement (Estradiol cream) has some POSITIVE role to prevent Osteoporosis and related complication. She will start FRESHLY after consultation with her gynecologist. It would be worthwhile.

Hope, I have answered your query. Kindly, close the discussion.

All the best and good luck.

Dr S Patra
