What is Mosaic trisomy 14?

Question: I am 32 years old and my wife is 29. She has undergone 2 miscarriages - one in 2011 and another one in 2014 ( both pregancy losses for within first 4 weeks ). We have no kids yet. She got some blood tests done to check her hormones and antibodies. She also had pap smear test done. All reports are normal except that she is pre-diabetic. We both got karyotyping done. Wife's report is normal but mine said I have an extra segment in the short arm of chromosome 14. They said the condition is called 14 p+. Can you please guide me with the impact of this condition on the miscarriages. We want to know if it is worthwhile to try for kids normally or not.

Brief Answer:
Mosaic trisomy 14

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I read your query and I understand your concerns.

Following is my reply:

1) This condition is called Mosaic trisomy 14.

2) The chances of miscarriage are high in persons with this disorder.

3) Even if successful pregnancy occurs there is possiblity of abnormal babies.

4) The solution is to undergo Preimplantation genetic diagnosis and transfer embryos which are healthy after ICSI procedure.

5) Another option is to use donor semen for fertilization ( cost effective).

Let me know if you have any more queries.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. But doesn't trisomy mean an extra chromosome? My karyotype report shows an extra segment in short arm of chromosome 14 and not an extra chromosome.
