What Does White Bumps On Hand After Burn Injury Indicate?

default
Posted on Sun, 19 Apr 2015
Question: I recently burned my hand, and i went to the hospital.. they said it was a second degree burn. Now that the burn is healing nicely and the dead skin is starting to peel, i notice some white bumps on my hand, similar to white heads, i'm not sure if this is normal part of the healing process or should i be concerned?

I burnt my hand about 2 weeks ago, it started to itch about a few days ago when the skin started to peel and the white head appeared after the dead skin peeled but i was wondering if it is because i was still wearing the gauze after the skin peeled and the friction from the gauze and the new skin caused it, because the white heads arent there before that

i tried to upload a picture on the side but i'm not exactly sure if it got uploaded or not

Brief Answer:
White dot are milias formed due to blockage of sweat glands of skin

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome back and thanks for posting your picture with further details.

I have gone through the picture of hand and after analyzing the picture I fully reassure you that the area is healing quite nicely.

The white colored dots which you are able to see are "milia". This is a common sequel to healing of burn wounds. These milias are formed due to blockage of sweat glands of the affected as well nearby skin. You can see that the burn marks are dark brown to blackish now which shows that the burn is healing very nicely.

In next of 5-7 days the skin will peel off by itself and then fall off completely in around 10- 14 days. Till that time I would have preferred to apply a plane antibacterial cream.

Once the skin is shed off then at that point of time I would have preferred to apply a mild steroid such as Fluticasone cream for 7-10 days after peeling of the skin so that the chances of marks after burn can be reduced.

Make it sure that she is not exposing the area to direct sunlight as well as to direct environmental factors. It is also very important that she should not touch the area at all and do not try to take off the skin at all as can cause pigmentation as well as infection.

I hope above information will relax you. I will be glad to answer any further of your queries.

With regards,

The skin already started peeling, the brown skin left on the hand are the leftover skin that haven't peeled yet. Will the millia disappear on its own or is it something i need to take care of?
I will need to see a doctor to get a prescription for the Fluticasone cream right? or is there an over the counter alternative?

I've applied a layer of neosporin on it, is it okay to keep it covered with the gauze or should i leave it uncovered?

Brief Answer:
Do not cover the area as can get macerated. Keep the area open.

Detailed Answer:
Hello young fellow,

Welcome back and thanks a lot for your further follow up.

In case if the skin is already peeling off then you can continue to apply Neosporin over it. Please check if you feel any burning or irritation after application of neosporin as it can sometimes cause the same.

Do not cover the area as can get macerated. Keep the area open as it will improve the healing process. Make sure that you are not exposing the hand to direct sunlight or other noxious factor.

Once the skin gets peeled off completely then hydorcortisone cream can also be applied. This can be found as over the counter medication. Apply all the creams in thinnest possible amount so that it should not be visible to the naked eye.

My all best wishes for your early recovery.
