What Does This Liver Function Test Post Hepatitis B Treatment Indicate?

Posted on Tue, 2 Dec 2014
Question: Hi

I am 34 years old and was suffering from cold and cough as one of the symptom on 1st September, immediately on 22nd September I was diagnosed with Hepatitis B acute with jaundice/yellow urine with no any other symptoms. I was admitted in hospital as my Billirubin count raised to 16 and also SGPT was 3000 count plus. I got my LFT test yesterday and INR too. My Bilirubin is 2, SGPT 25 and INR 1.1.
I have managed to bring my all enzyme levels and inflammation normal as before. do you think I am no more in danger and when I say that, does it mean I will recover from acute hepatitis B much before 6 month as a normal threshold and also do you think I should be negative in few weeks? Please let me know if I can start gyming and weight lifting after weeks?any specific diet that I should follow while gyming. I am a athlete and lost few weight due to boiled food intake since last 2 month.

Brief Answer:
Need more tests later

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.

Normalization of liver function does not mean you have recovered from hepatitis B infection.
Spontaneous recovery occurs in about 90% and the rest the infection enters a chronic phase and the virus stays in the body for the rest of the life.

To know whether you have recovered completely, the following tests should be done after 6 months.
1. Anti HBeAg
2. HBV DNA

Yes you can start 'gyming'.
There is no specific diet required.

I hope that answers your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks so much for your prompt response DR RK.

do you mean to say I cant be negative before 6 months at all? I understand 6 month is a threshold but that's the max? correct? do you think I can get the above suggested test after few weeks and check if I am still positive?

Brief Answer:
You can become negative before 6 months

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
HBsAg usually takes about 12 weeks to disappear after an acute infection.
But in a small percentage it disappears even before that.

I would advise you to test HBsAg after 12 weeks.

I hope that answers your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks heaps, Doctor.

I just few things in mind that I wish to clarify or rather interpret .

I have shared my current LFT report and also shared the past reports. I have drastically improved in my enzymes levels and normal in 6 weeks from the time I had these symptoms and was diagnosed hepatitis B.

Do you think these signs are quite positive that I should be fine soon, though I understand that the healthy liver has nothing to impact my Hep B result, But there must be some physical changes or sign that shows I am back healthy and should be fine?

2ndly- as I mentioned earlier, I am an athlete and have lost lot of energy and stamina due to boiled food due to Jaundice .can you suggest any food diet that I should follow after immediate recovery from jaundice so that I can recover my energy knowing I am NOn vegetarian.

3rd- can I go for high protein diet and protein supplement to support my sport activities as I want to be safe and not stress my liver.

Thanking in advance.

I look forward hearing from you soon.

cheers XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Answer given below

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Raised liver enzymes means liver cells are damaged.
If the levels have reached the baseline, it means the liver damage is repaired.
Complete recovery from hepatitis B is not assessed with these alone but with the tests I have mentioned earlier.

A good appetite is a good sign of liver recovery.
Since the liver enzymes have come back to baseline levels again, you can take the routine diet which you have been taking earlier.

Yes, you can go for high protein diet.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr.R.K.
