Brief Answer:
It is a age related finding and it is expected finding in your mother's age

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Your mother's findings suggests unfolding of aorta.Unfolding of aorta is causing widening of mediastinum. It is due to opened up appearance of aortic arch in chest X-ray.
It is generally a age related finding and it is expected finding in your mother's age.
However,it may be early seen in hypertension, diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis etc.
Generally it is not concerning and it doesn't require any treatment.
But it need clinical correlation. It may be associated with aortic aneurysm, aortic dissection etc.If patient is having chest pain etc then contrast CT scan of thorax can be advised.
