Posted on Fri, 4 Sep 2015
Question: I have always been on the border line of pre diabetes. My latest and highest glucose reading was 104. My father, now deceased, had type 2 diabetes. My mother is 95 and she also has type 2. I know exercise and diet are very important. But, are there any specific foods or supplements that I should include in my diet that could help prevent diabetes in the future? Also, am I a candidate for any medicafions at this time?

Brief Answer:
Please arrange for a glucose tolerence test

Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern. You must request your doctor to arrange a 75 gram oral glucose test and an Hba1c. You shouldnt restrict diet prior to an oral glucose tolerence test. If the glucose tolerence test and Hba1c indicate prediabetes, then you should meet a dietician. A diet rich in fiber, vegetables and fruits and low in simple carbohydrates ( like sugar) is a good diet for preveting or postponing diabetes. This diet will help you to maintain an ideal weight. Exercise is very important and you must aim for 45 minutes of brisk walk daily. These measures will help to reduce the chance of diabetes. If the glucose tolerence test indicate prediabetes, you may start on METFORMIN which is an excellent drug to delay or prevent diabetes which is recomended by XXXXXXX Diabetes Association.

Dr XXXXXXX Sorry for the delay. I will discuss a glucose tolerance test with my doctor. Also, I have been diagnosed with IBS and have had many stomach issues. But, lately the only thing that seems to bother me regarding my stomach is when I have a sugary snack after dinner. Is this possible because of my prediabetes?

Brief Answer:
Stress can worsen both

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Sugary snack can cause initial high sugar and later low sugars ( due to excess insulin secretion in body in response to initial rise in sugars) in pre diabetes stage.
Some sugars ( example lactose) can cause stomach problems like in lactose intolerence. There is no relation of IBS and pre diabetes ,but stress can worsen both these.
