What Does This Biopsy Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 Jun 2017
Question: I recently had a biopsy performed by removing a small piece of skin from the top of my nose. The biopsy report indicated a mildly atypical junctional melanocytic proliferation composed of scattered melancocyte that are strewn along the basal layer. Multiple deep cuts and a Melan-A immunostain were examined and failed to reveal significant upward spread in the epidermis. As the biopsy is small and the changes extend to the peripheral margins, changes of symmetry and circumscription are hard to evaluate. A larger biopsy or if possible, complete removal of this lesion to rule early melanoma in situ are recommended.

My question (I have an appointment with an Ocologist soon) is how likely is it that melanoma is present?

Brief Answer:
Minimal Chances but repeat biopsy indicated

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to HealthcareMagic..
I thank you for posting your query here.

I will analyze all your points and provide necessary explanation and how to go about..
Please note.

1. After reading the entire history, I could come to a conclusion that, the biopsy done was inconclusive.

2. When the 1st biopsy was inconclusive then repeat biopsy is indicated.
Your doctor is right in doing so..

But let me tell you few facts..
1. Melanoma is generally seen in extremities and not nose.

2. A mole, most commonly undergoes this change.
So, did you have any kind of mole on that nose area??

3. And do not worry, i personally feel your chances of melanoma is very minimal.
But, keep the fingers crossed and biopsy can tell us the fact of what exactly it is..

Hope I have answered your questions..
Please get back to me with answers and any questions if you have..
Take care and God bless..

The biopsy removed a small piece of discolored skin (tan). It was not a mole nor did this piece of skin appear shiny, crusty nor was it itchy or erupted in any manner. Simply a smooth, abnormally colored piece of skin.
