Posted on Wed, 18 Mar 2015
Question: My husband has been hurting, chest, can't set up etc: Dr ordered xrays showed (the nodular opacity in the right upper lobe mass .the lungs are diminihed and there are persistent interstital densities with both lower lobes..pleural spaces are clear). Had a MRI (Sequelae of CABG grossly unremarkable etc) another paragraph: upper abdomen shows normal adrenal glands, Impression: right upper lobe mass concerning for primary bronchogenic carinoma with mediastinal adenopathy. Left lung clear and noramal adrenal glands....DO YOU THINK THIS IS SERIOUS, LIFE THREATENING? Has not seen a doctor yet to go over this. What would you suggest would be his next step

Brief Answer:
Lung cancer is most probable diagnosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Does he smoke?
Being hones with you, the mass found in the right lung seems to be a lung cancer. Enlarged lymph nodes in the mediastinum can be due to cancer metastases. This diagnosis needs to be confirmed, however if he smokes, this is very probable.
It is not anything urgent, but left without treatment is life threatening for sure.

He should consult pulmunologist as soon as possible and have bronchoscopy done to collect samples from the tumor. Samples will be checked by a pathologist and finally confirm or rule the cancer out.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Brief Answer:
Cancer spreading to lymph nodes is called metastases.

Detailed Answer:
Cancer is build of mutated cells. The only aim of this cells is to multiply. This multiplication causes replacing healthy organ cells to useless cancer cells. When a cancer cells during this multiplication and spreading meets lymphatic vessel or blood vessel, it migrates with a stream to another location. Usually the first location where a cancer spreads are regional lymph nodes. Such spreading to lymph nodes is called metastases.
It is hard to say how advanced is his possible cancer. Affected lymph nodes increase the risk that some cancer cells have already spread to other parts of his body. That is why he needs quick diagnose and treatment.
