Brief Answer:
Atherosclerosis and vasculitis are the commonest causes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

Abnormal shrinking of blood vessels is most commonly caused due to atherosclerosis (deposition of cholesterol, fibrin, etc). Common risk factors for atherosclerosis are diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol.

The second most common cause of shrinking blood vessels is vasculitis, in which there is inflammation of the vessel wall.

Other causes are not so common- drug induced (due to cocaine, nasal decongestants, sumatriptan, ergot, etc), infections of the central nervous system (such as varicella, fungus, bacterial, etc).

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
