Posted on Mon, 22 Sep 2014
Question: I have been taking Glutathione tablets along with vitamin c for the last 4 weeks. Yesterday, I did my liver function test .It shows
Bilirubin Direct=0.5mg/dl
Bilirubin Total=1.4mg/dl
Albumin=4.3gm/dl
Globulin=1gm/dl
Total protein=5.3gm/dl
Is there anything to worry?

Brief Answer:
Incomplete Liver Function Test

Detailed Answer:
Hello! Your liver function test report does not mention the level of liver enzymes- SGOT, SGPT and S.Alkaline Phosphatase. It is therefore not possible to make an assessment of inflammation in the liver.The parameters you've written about do not suggest any significant liver disease. Glutathione & Vitamin C,in generally accepted doses, do not affect the liver adversely, so if you're concerned about the effect of these two supplements I do not see any cause of worry.Do write in if you need any further clarification. All the best!

Brief Answer:
A/G ratio is high

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again,

With the complete liver function tests the picture gets clearer.The point of concern is not so much SGOT, SGPT or Alkaline Phosphatase (which tells me that there is no inflammation in the liver) but a relatively low level Protein (6.0-8.4) and Globulin (2.3-3.5). A low Globulin level is seen liver disease, kidney disorder,celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease,acute hemolytic anemia & a condition called hypogammaglobulinemia.It is also possible that the proteins you consume are not being digested or absorbed properly in the digestive system.My advice would be first to repeat the protein/albumin/globulin level test to confirm the earlier report. If confirmed,a series of tests will be required to investigate the disorders I've mentioned above.

For this you'll need to contact your physician.

All the best!
