What Does My Endoscopic Examination Test Report Indicate?

Posted on Tue, 14 Jul 2015
Question: I had an endoscopic examination of a tumor in the pancreatic head. The impression was pancreatic parenchymal abnormalities consisting of diffuse echogenecity where noted in the entire
pancreas and it says the endoscopic appearance is highly suspicious for gist vs Neroendocrine tumour. Can you explain what this means so that I can understand?
Thank you for your help.

Brief Answer:
this is pancreas tumor

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
First, there is obviously detected tumor in pancreatic head. Bad news are that it has some features of malignant tumors, but good thing is that it doesnt looks like carcinoma which has bad prognosis. GIST and neuroendocrine tumors have much better prognosis and can be completely surgically removed. It is always hard to have exact diagnosis in pancreas lesions since biopsy cant be performed preoperatively.
What you should do next is MRI scan and so called octreotid scan and check markers such as cromogranina A and HIAA.
This will rule out possible neuroendocrine tumor.
Therapy is surgical removal. The extent depends on size and type of tumor so only local resection of pancreas can be done or so called Whipples procedure.
In every case, it is good that tumor is found and it seems like to be early stage, boths GIST and NET are better when compared to carcinomas and you have very good chances for complete cure.
Wish you good health. Regards

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
I am sure everything will be fine. If they decided to do laparoscopic whipple then it means that your doctors consider this as to be completely operable.
Please if you find time inform us about results and recovery.
Wish you good health,good luck.
