Brief Answer:
Indicative of Chronic Kidney Disease

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear. Thanks for giving an opportunity to address your query.

Low Vitamin B12 deficiency along with low eGFR, sodium and chloride levels is an indicator of Chronic Kidney Disease(a condition in which there is progressive loss of kidney function over months or years).

Low B12 affects your blood cells(causes anemia), damages nerves and affects memory and thinking.I would do the relevant test to diagnose CKD(as discussed below).I were to supplement Vitamin B12 2-3ug/day(along with folate-1mg/day).

eGFR is estimated glomerular filtration rate which gives a measure of creatinine a waste product that comes out from your muscles.Normally healthy kidneys filter creatinine and normal eGFR value is 60 or more.Low levels with abnormal electrolytes(sodium/chloride) indicate initial stages of Chronic Kidney Disease(CKD).Extremely low eGFR (<15) indicate kidney failure.

However if you have got eGFR test for the first time and eGFR levels are bordeline then I were to repeat the test within the next 3 months recheck eGFR values.

I were to evaluate your blood pressures , blood glucose(fasting and post prandial), get urine analysis(check the presence of protein and blood) when the eGFR levels are low.

Heart of management of CKD is to have the right amounts of protein, get your pressures and sugars under control(if any).Diet chart has to be followed stringently to increase the longevity and quality of life.

Thank you Doctor XXXXXXX

I have another question: I have lost about 80% of my hearing in my left ear, due to damage to the nerve and death of the little hairs? in side the ear. This happened suddenly and I have tinnitus in that ear as well. I have had EMG test. I have also had left ulnar nerve surgery and left carpal tunnel surgery. Is there something that can be causing all of this damage on my left side?

Thank you, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Carpal tunnel can be linked to kidney disease

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear. Thanks for writing me back.

According to me kidney disease and hearing loss do not have any relationship.

But yes, carpal tunnel syndrome can be due to underlying pre-existing undetected kidney disease.Tinnitus is usually seen in 80% of the individuals with the type of hearing loss that you have quoted above.

There is no particular reason for both of them being on left side.It is more so a co-incidental happening.

Hope this answers your query. Please feel free to post me for further clarifications that you may have.
