Posted on Mon, 29 Sep 2014
Question: I have a red ridge on my penis shaft that was not there before. Had it for about three weeks now! Does not hurt and almost looks like a vein except not blue.
I have no other symptoms. It does look redder after a shower.

Brief Answer:
venous engorgement

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.

Looking at the clinical symptoms and query, my opinion is as follows:

1. Appears to be venous engorgement. Its a myth that veins are completely blue. If it is venous engorgement, then nothing to worry. As it is like a blood vessel, nothing to worry

2. Clear picture necessary for further advise.

3. Is it always present or only on occasions?

Hope it helps.

Do get back with more details. Worried only if it is hard, thick lesion.

Any further queries, happy to help again.

Doctor,

Thanks for your response. It has been consistently present since about three weeks ago. It is not open...as in an breakage in skin....It almost looks like a very minor 1st degree burn but approx. one inch and more prevalent and red in color during an erection and for awhile thereafter. Then it just looks like a normal healing type minor wound. Again there is absolutely no pain or discomfort in any manner and other than appearance, I would not even know it is there. If it is a vein is it likely that something like this would all of a sudden become prevalent after all these years? Thanks so much again for your response.

Brief Answer:
Possibly erythroplasia of queyrat

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking again.

A lesion present since three weeks and not healing at this age, needs to be thought of carefully.
This is not definitely venous engorgement.

It looks to be lesion called as erythroplasia of queyrat. You can google and see if the lesion matches. If it is, its still very early days, you can meet your doctor for biopsy and histopathology confirmation.

As there is no breakage in skin, at present infections are being not thought of.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.

Thanks again Doctor for your response. I did look up pictures of what you describe and I look nothing like that. Plus I forgot to mention that I am circumcised and the literature seems to suggest though not necessarily in all cases, that that condition is prevalent among non-circumcised people. My description is probably not what you are use to. But I guess it could be best described as if it were a tiny whip mark that is red in color. It does actually seem to follow a vein pathway and does not involve the head of the penis at all. Kind of like veins popping up on the arm and in this case.....one popping up on the shaft of my penis that just stays regardless. There is no discharge or flaking....just a rope like venious looking thing that all of a sudden came to be. Does not hurt one bit and I do not have any other similar marking anywhere. Just wanted to fill you in and let you know that I did look at the pics. Thanks again for all your expertise. I do appreciate it.

Brief Answer:
Possible venous thrombosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking again.

Good to know that it is not erythroplasia of queyrat.

At present I can rule of causes of infection or allergy. Only if it opens, you need to worry. Possibly it is venous engorgement due to venous thrombosis. It should clear up soon.

You keep evaluating it every 15 days once, if it is XXXXXXX not to worry.

Keep watching for its movement and look for formation of ulcer. If it ruptures, or becomes immobile or starts to become painful, then you can contact me again or your doctor. At present, nothing to worry.

Venous thrombosis is common at this age, due to vascular injury.

Without an image, this is the best I can do. It should be a venous engorgement.

Hope it helps.
