What Do The Following Pituitary MRI Scan Results Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Nov 2016
Question: Hi I have been to an ENT clinic today for a repeat "scope" - something thin was pushed up each nostril. I had previously had a pituitary MRI scan which showed a squashed Pituitary. The doctor now wants to do a biopsy of the adenoid pad. Is this a cause to worry about e.g. cancer. What does this all mean for me. What symptoms should I look out for..

Brief Answer:
Biopsy helps in making diagnosis

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. The doctor's advise to biopsy the adenoids could be due to many reasons like

: Some mass lesion due to chronic infection e.g. fungal
: Bengin tumor
: Nasal polyp
: Cancer
: Hypertrophied mucosa

So it is not necessary that it is only doubt of cancer. If cancer is the cause, then you will be having

: Bleeding through nose, painless, spontaneous
: Foul smell
: weight loss
: Loss of appetite
: generalised weakness
: Large mass obstructing the nostrils
: Rapid growth of the mass

In case of fever, pain in nostrils, pus discharge, long duration of symptoms, history of allergy, cancer is unlikely.

Hope you will understand my point. Thanks. Take care.
If still in doubt, do let me know.
