What Do Strange Sensations And Protrusion After Colostomy Reversal Indicate?

default
Posted on Fri, 30 Oct 2015
Question: I recently had a colostomy reversed and now on the left side I have strange sensation and sometimes protusions. This is where the colostomy was placed. It has always had more fat and protruded after the first surgery and now has more fat in the area ( I am not overweight, but do have some belly fat). If I massage the area it relaxes and changes in size and density. Is this a hernia or just healing from the surgery?

Brief Answer:
Hernia has impulse on coughing, is reducible and can feel a gap

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted your history of colostomy reversal, have strange sensation and protrusions on the left side where the colostomy was there. You also feel that there is more fat in the area - if you massage the area, it relaxes and changes in size and density.

All the points you have so well explained indicate that there may be protrusion.
Please see for the following cardinal symptoms and sign of a hernia:
- There is impulse on coughing (Protrusion is felt or seen distinctly on coughing)
- The protrusion is reducible
- sometimes by palpation you can feel the gap in the abdominal wall.

If these are present it is hernia.
If not present it is just weakness in the abdominal wall causing protrusion and is not called a true hernia.

I hope this answer helps you.
Please feel free to communicate if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
