Brief Answer:
kidney stones

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your health care concerns.

You are concerned that you had a change in urine to red and then brown. Now you have back pain on your left side. This constellation of symptoms sounds like you have a kidney stone. The pain may get worse as the stone migrates into your bladder. You may need additional pain control while the stone is passing.

The change in color could also indicate an infection in your kidney known and pyelonephritis. Because you are having pain I would recommend that you seek medical attention at an ER or urgent care center. They can run the appropriate tests to determine if you have a kidney stone or a kidney infection or other kidney problem. I don't think you should wait.

In summary
1. probable kidney stone
2. need to see doctor to run appropriate tests
3. possible kidney infection or other kidney problem

I hope this answers your question. Please contact HCM again with your health care concerns and questions
