default
Posted on Fri, 24 Jun 2016
Question: For the last 2 hours I've had a strange sensation in my mouth - tip of tongue and roof of mouth felt like a film over them. Now also feeling a little weird toward back of mouth and outer lips. What could this be? Should I take something for it?

Brief Answer:
Some thoughts on this

Detailed Answer:
Hello Ms. XXXX,

A variety of different circumstances can cause the sensations you are having. None of them are concerning and the strange sensation will likely resolve on it's own when you get up tomorrow. Sometimes certain foods, particularly artificial flavorings and sweeteners can do this. But also starchy carbohydrates, or strong citrus can cause symptoms like this. Also some mouthwashes.

And even a dry mouth can feel filmy too.

If it isn't causing pain, noticeable swelling, or difficulty breathing (which I'll assume it is not, based on your description) then it doesn't need treatment.

Consider drinking water to make sure it isn't from dehydration.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information or clarification.
