What Causes Vaginal Bleeding Between Periods After ParaGard Insertion?

Posted on Wed, 22 Jul 2015
Question: I had an IUD ( paraguard) put in last August, 2014. I like it except I have spotting between periods. I called my doctor's office and they said this was totally normal. Is it normal? When should the spotting be considered not normal? Thanks for your help.

Brief Answer:
spotting will subside in 2-3months.

Detailed Answer:
Hello ,

Welcome to HCM,

I can understand your concerns,

Spotting or menstrual problems is most common side effect of paraguard.it is usually decrease after two to three months.so it is normal in starting months of insertion.

You should contact your doctor if it persists more than 3months or you are not able to endure it.

Hope this helps,

Feel free to ask further.

Thanks.

I have had the IUD in for almost 11th months. The spotting doesn't happen often, but it does happen during ovulation.

Brief Answer:
ovulation bleeding.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.
Sorry for the late response.

Spotting during ovulation or ovulation bleeding is quite normal.
During ovulation, the follicle that surrounds and protects the egg, tends to mature and grow. Eventually these will rupture and this can result in a small amount of bleeding.

This spotting is sign of ovulation.

In my opinion, you should not worry about this.
If its occurring at every ovulation, then you must consult your doctor to rule out vaginal infection (this can be a cause of spotting).

Hope this helps.
Take care.
Thanks.
