What Causes Tissue Discharge After Mirena Placement?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Apr 2015
Question: I have a mirena since july. It was placed 8 weeks postpartum after my 4th baby. For last two days ive had a couple incidents of tissue being expelled. It looked white and c shaped without any bleeding. Previous had thin discharge similiar to leukorehha. *sp?* pregnancy test was negative 2 days ago. Now today ive gotten awful abd pain with diarrhea and vomiting. I had natural labor and this pain was worse. The pain happened after breastfeeding both times. Now pain is mild and tolerable. Intense pain lasted 10 minutes with no bleeding or anything expelling vaginally.... could something be wrong with my iud?

Brief Answer:
Can be due to uterine contractions.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The sudden intense pain that you had specially after breast feeding is likely to be due to uterine contractions. Such occasional contractions can happen after insertion of mirena coil. This can be associated with minor spotting or bleeding. This is a normal finding. The pain will gradually decrease as the mirena coil settles down.
This is not suggestive of anything wrong with mirena. In case the pain is severe then taking an over the counter anti spasmodic will help.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Ive had contractions with breastfeeding, but never at 10 months. And ive had the iud for 8 months. That was my concern...especially with tissue passing. Can the body reject the iud after this long? I have a history of sirgical removal of ovarian cysts on 4 different occasions and hx of ectopic.

Brief Answer:
Not likely to be expelled.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
It is not likely for IUD to be expelled spontaneously 8 months after the insertion.
The pain that you had was due to uterine contractions. The contractions can happen occasionally. If you are having regular periods then there is no need to worry. In case the periods are delayed then just do a pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy.
Hope my answer is helpful.
