default
Posted on Wed, 26 Aug 2015
Question: What can cause the stomach to die. Operated on my brother yesterday, cut out the dead stomach and was going to try and reroute and sme a small portion of stomach but when they tried to do this, they discovered more of the stomach to be dead. He also has low sugar. He has od'd on drugs a couple of times in the last couple of weeks but drs don't think this has anything to do with it. They said it is a mystery to them as to why it continues to die. After surgery tomorrow tomorrow to clean nd reroute, they will close him up. Any idea what this could be?

Brief Answer:
idiopathic in most of the cases, vascular occlusion.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Sorry to know that your brother is suffering from such a rare problem.
I would like to know whether it is stomach proper or the small or large intestine that is showing the changes?
The commonest reason is vascular. The arterial blood supply gets cut due to disease of the vessel or occlusion by a clot or a plaque.
Request them for angiography, they would get this done if possible and may help to find the reason.

Wishing your brother successful surgery and good recovery.
