What Causes Swelling On Toe?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Feb 2015
Question: I woke up today with a small sore and swollen area on the inside of my left big toe. Photos can be attached if you like. My right foot is fine. I know of no incidents or conditions that would explain this. Not on any meds other than multivitamins. I have not worked on my toes or feet in days and have not trimmed my toe nails in days. Is there anything I try at home to relieve this condition? I don't have health care coverage. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Ingrown nail and inflammation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

This sore area is caused by a nail compression. Most likely you have the ingrown nail on this side. Under the skin in the sore area is an invisible part of the nail. This part due to for example too tight shoes or constant shoe irritation gets swollen and painful. This is generally a kind of inflammation.

At your case it does not look bad so the compression and inflammation are only mild.
Ingrown nail should be treated with a piece of nail removal (the one which directly compresses the tissues). This can be done by general surgeon.
You can also try to do this by yourself if you can not visit a doctor. Or at least try to keep this area clean and avoid any compression of this area. Sometimes its enough to heal it.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
