What Causes Swelling In The Jaw Area After Injury?

default
Posted on Wed, 31 Aug 2016
Question: Four days after being sucker-punched in the jaw, my jaw seems to be slightly larger on the side I was hit (right on the corner, under my left ear). It feels hard there, not like fluid build-up, but like the bone is actually larger than it used to be. It scarcely hurts. Will it go away with time?

Brief Answer:
Follow the Advises as below..

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX, Welcome to HCM,

I've gone thorough your query and understand your concern..

Yes it seems like a bad hurt..

The unequal larger size, hard feeling is due to post traumatic swelling..

Please be vigilant regarding any discoloration (reddish black/blue) which may indicate a secondary hematoma (subcutaneous collection of blood & blood clots)..

Also be watchful for any sudden onset nausea/vomiting/decreased hearing on the affected/sudden severe headache/dizziness/black-outs (please don't worry as of now but you should note that these are all signs of significant trauma, and if at all happen, then you need to visit your nearest ER/Urgent care for a detailed physical check-up and CAT scan to rule out any Skull/Head/Ear injury)..

As four days already over, i don't think it's that severe, however for faster healing/recovery , just apply Ice-cold compression(even a bag of frozen peas will do) three times a day, it'll help reducing the swelling..

Take Tab PARACETAMOL 650 mg three times a day after food for next 3 days, it'll provide relief from the pain..

Don't worry, it should go away within a few days only (exact duration varies from the intensity of injury, from person to person, however it should be subsided within 7-10 days)..

Let me know if your having any further queries, I'll be glad to clarify..

Take Care
Kind Regards
