Question: I had extreme difficulty breathing for a short time last night. What are possible causes?

Sudden onset of breathlessness especially in night is mostly due to congestive cardiac failure.
And at your age of 74 years, possibility of this is higher.
So better to consult doctor and get done ecg and 2d echo to rule out cardiac diseases.
Another possibility is bronchitis.
For this PFT (Pulmonary Function Test) is needed.
So consult doctor and discuss all these.
First diagnose yourself and then start appropriate treatment.
