What Causes Sudden Chest Pain In A Child?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Nov 2015
Question: My grandson is 7 and is an active, smart little boy. In previous years he couldn't explain what was wrong. Several times when he was super active he would then slow down and put his hand on his chest. We mentioned it to his doctor and she examined him and said he was a healthy boy and not to worry about anything. Today while playing soccer he once again while running started to slow down and put his hand to his chest. His father asked him what he felt and how strong the pain was on a scale of 1 to 10, he said it was a pain in mid chest and on scale of 4 1/2. So we're thinking making a pediatric cardiologist appointment first, then allergist, etc. Please give me your thoughts

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to the HCM

I completely understand your concerns but don't worry. The complaints of your son are most likely due to musculoskeletal pain which are well localized and aggravated by exercise. It needs symptomatic treatment such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain relief. A good healthy diet, plenty of fluids and regular exercise will help in improving the condition.

The other possibility of obstructive airway disease such as exercise induced asthma needs to be ruled out as well by a good clinical examination and pulmonary function test. If present,it can be easily treated by regular bronchodilator medications. Allergist will help you in this regard.

There is a less likely possibility of cardiovascular disease such as arrhythmia ( prolonged QT syndrome). It requires ECG for diagnosis and a proper clinical examination by pediatrician or cardiologist.

Hopefully this will help you. I would be happy to help you in any further questions.

Take care
