Posted on Tue, 12 Jul 2016
Question: I am a contact lens wearer..the last few days my vision has been hazy and driving tonight I am seeing rainbows around the lights..what can cause this? I am a high minus and I have had high pressure in my eyes before. I was last checked 4 months ago and my pressures were fine. During the day my vision has not been as clear like there is smoke in the air?.

Brief Answer:
Checkups required.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for sending your query to us.
Two facts which I gather from your statement, slight haziness of vision and rainbow colors. Both are significant and primarily intraocular pressure is to be monitored. Slight corneal haze will lead to hazy vision as well as rainbow colors. Mind you, pressure in high minus patients appears to be lower than what it actually is so one has to measure corneal thickness by pachymetery to have actual corrected pressure reading.
Get a complete eye examination immediately to rule out raised IOP,refraction and routine eye examination. Do get back to me in case of any further query in this regard.

It seems worse when I have been wearing my contacts..could it be due to corneal swelling due to overwear of my contacts. How about cataracts would that give me rainbows? Last visit he said I had a cortical cataract. It just seems worse when I insert my contacts. When I have my glasses on I do not seem to have as much haze. Thanks so much!! Will they need to dilate me to determine the cause? What is slight corneal haze..?thanks!!

Brief Answer:
Fetailed examination needed.

Detailed Answer:
My dear,
Thanks for getting back to us.
There are various levels of involvement that can present similar picture. The exact cause can only be decided by proper examination. Excesdive contact lens wear can give rise to epithelial edema which gives rainbow colors, raised pressure alsopresents same picture. It is the accumulation of fluid droplets in outer layer which splits white light into seven colours.Early cataract is unlikely to cause this.
Let us have a complete examination to reach a correct diagnosis to offer proper management.

Okay I went to the doc..at 12pm my pressures were 21 in right and left..at 5 pm my right was 24 and my left 21. What would cause that..does it indicate a bigger problem. He wants me to start on travitron..I do not want to take the eye drop if I do not have to...I have had high pressures off and on for 18 years..My nerve still looks good..my hole in my nerve is not big..I think he said it wS a 2.? He did say there were small spots on each nerve that maybe look suspicious but it might be because of being nearsighted or maybe I was born with it..he wants me to repeat the visual fields test last test 6 months ago was good. He wants me to start on the eye drop because last visit my pressures were 17 and now they have gone up..usually my pressure stay around 20-22-23. Every once in a while they will go up a little higher but will go back down..stress? Would you put your patient on this drug for what my doc said a trial period.? I trust you so much please advise..thanks so much! I have worn my glasses all day no hazy vision or rainbows today..could it be dry contacts that caused these rainbows? Since. I fluctuate in pressure could the eye with the rainbow be caused by elevated pressure.?

Brief Answer:
Glaucoma suspect.

Detailed Answer:
My dear,
Good of you to get back to me.
Royal air force puts its pilots in suspect category when pressure if 21.That is where i will put you.My point of worry is the damage caused by raised pressure are irreversible. We have field charting for the suspect category at 6 month interval and have iop monitoring at 2to 4 weeks interval.
This pressure doesn't cause rainbow colours. They may be due to contact lenses. You can change them if they are old.Keep a watch ,be alert and do get back to me in case of any further issue.
