Posted on Fri, 4 Nov 2016
Question: I hope you can help......for the past two or three weeks, I've noticed a very strong armpit odor. For instance, I showered yesterday afternoon and by bedtime I smelled as if I hadn't showered in several days. I had even used deodorant. I haven't changed deodorants or soaps, but I frequently vary my hair prodducts.
I am a 54 y/o female, having had an ablation of my uterus, I'm going by hot flashes and mood swings to tell me that I'm in menopause. Could this be a side effect of menopause and what can be done about it?

Brief Answer:
Excessive sweating as cause;see details below...

Detailed Answer:
Hi my dear,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

You say :
- are 54 years old female
- ablation in uterus
- symptoms: hot flashes, mood swings, strong armpit odor
- keep on showering and changing personal care products

You are going through menopause with mood swing, hot flashes. The symptoms are frequently associated with increased sweating. This is leading to strong armpit odor.

Showering at least once a day is a good way to prevent odor. But, do not forget to dry your body well, especially folding areas such as armpit.

Keep in mind that body skin is composed of various bacteria. When, you let the skin not well dry, these bacteria breed on it causing the odor.

I always recommend my patients with the same problems with body odor as you to use antibacterial soaps, to make sure to reduce the bacteria that would breed on the skin. This is a way of reducing odor.

Next, when choosing antiperspirant deodorants, try to choose one which is mentioned as "strong antiperspirant or deodorant". Do not forget to apply on your skin after drying very well first.

It is important to change your clothes frequently if you are sweating a lot especially when it comes to underwear.

Foods/drinks you consume do also affect the body odor especially under armpits. For example: spices, peppers, coffee, alcohol, etc. Try to avoid them and you'll see the difference.

Hope this was of help. Let me know if you have further queries.
