What Causes Spotting When On Medication For UTI?

default
Posted on Wed, 31 Dec 2014
Question: Hi I'm on birth control lomedia 24 and I just recently had been prescribed bactrium for a UTI on Wednesday night. I took one pill Wednesday and 2 pills Thursday and then had sex with no other type of birth control. I take my birth control on a perfect schedule and it's halfway through the cycle but I'm having spotting which I read means that the antibiotic is messing with the birth control. It is now Saturday should I take plan B or should I be fine against pregnancy?

Brief Answer:
Spotting could simply be a symptom of the UTI

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Lomedia in itself is quite an effective birth control pill as it acts mainly by preventing the release of an egg (if no egg is released, sperm cannot alone cause fertilisation); and also by making the lining of the uterus thicker preventing sperm from travelling and reaching the egg (if at all it is still produced).

But I would also like to point out that spotting is also a side effect of the birth control you are using, and also a symptom of a UTI. So spotting could simply be because of the UTI alone, as this is a very common symptom.

In my opinion you should be covered by lomedia enough to prevent pregnancy, but as it is true that antibiotics can interfere with birth control at times, I do not see the harm in taking plan B just this once (only as long as you have unprotected sexual intercourse while on antibiotics). This way we can be a 100 % sure conception is prevented.

I hope you find my response both helpful and informative, please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help you ma'am.

Best wishes.
