What Causes Spotting Instead Of Menstruation?

default
Posted on Tue, 30 Dec 2014
Question: Had light spotting for 5 days instead of a period, which was a few days late to begin with. Had nothing, then a week later, started a normal period. Had gyn exam which appeared normal. All labs, hormones, thyroid came back normal. Not in early menopause per labs. Have an ultrasound scheduled for next week, and Dr. stated may need to have a uterine biopsy done. CA125 came back normal. My question is, is it common for all labs to be normal, and exam normal, with late period consisting of spotting, then nothing, then a regular period ) 42 day cycle and could this be uterine cancer? Worrying until next week.

Brief Answer:
Uterine cancer least likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The mild spotting that you had prior to the normal (delayed) period is a normal physiological variation. It can happen due to mild hormonal disturbance or stress, sudden exercise or a change in the diet.
If the amount of bleeding was normal then there is no need to worry. It is not likely to be associated with any endometrial pathology.
Since all your tests have also come normal there is no need to worry. Chances of having endometrial cancer are practically nil. Please do not worry.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
