What Causes Spotting During 5 Weeks Of Pregnancy With History Of Miscarriages?

Question: Dear Dr. XXXXXXX

My wife had 3 first trimester miscarriages so far and is 5 weeks pregnant now. Her HCG ( 12000 ) and Progesterone ( 36 ) levels are good and she is taking endometrin progesterone supplements ( 200 mg per day ) and baby aspirin. She observed some brown spotting today. It is very light. Should we be concerned ? An ultrasound scan was done on Feb 27th and sac and yolk were found. Doctor said everything looked good. Another scan is scheduled for March 6th. Can you please guide us with what needs to be done regarding brown spotting and what needs to be done if it increases ?

Thanks for writing..
I understand your concern..

Since the spotting is prior to appearance of cardiac activity, we need to wait and watch.. 2 reasons for spotting can be due to small clot in the uterus or a threatened abortion... You can take a progesterone injection and take complete bed rest..

Repeat scan on 6th march as scheduled.. Appearance of cardiac activity indicates healthy pregnancy..

Right now dont panic.. Avoid stress. Take nutritious food and adequate rest..
