What Causes Small Hard Bump On The Base Of Penis?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Feb 2015
Question: Hello Doctor, I have noticed a small hard lump towards the base of my penis--at about a 5 o'clock position. It seems to be on the shaft of the penis under the skin.
I have had a prostate cancer removal operation about 21/2 years ago. I have started to use an injection for sexual erection about once a fortnight for about six months now.
What do you think??

Brief Answer:
injection could be the cause

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
It is quite possible that your injections to improve erection could be contributing to the new lump at the bade of penis. This is one of the adverse effects we do counsel before we prescribe intra-cavernosal injections for post prostatectomy erectile dysfunction not responsive to sildenafil.
There is a possibility it could get worse or remain stable, and you could also have pain in which case it would be better to discontinue this mode and opt for something else like vacuum erection device which usually works, though the quality of erection would not be too great,i.e. a cold penis head, etc.
The other treatment option would be to have a penis implant.
A possibility could also be that you might be having a simple sebaceous cyst which is fairly common at the site you have mentioned and may not require any treatment whatsoever.
You are welcome to let me know the progress. Hope I have been of help.
Regards.

thank you Doctor
I feel it is the 'simple sebaceous cyst you mentioned in the second case.
I should have mentioned to you that I have been using these injections ten years even before the prostatectomy operation as I had a problem with erectile dysfunction. I stopped injections before the operation and resumed it again with higher dosage two years after. I had no problem with the injections during the pre operative period. Do you think that this second diagnosis of yours is the correct one?? regards XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
possible

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
If you have no pain associated with the swelling, a sebaceous cyst is a good possibility.
One way of my being able to advise you better would be if you can upload a couple of close up snaps of this lump, and we will take it from there.
Will look forward to hearing from you.

thank you for that Doctor
no pain associated with the lump.
the lump is under the skin and does not show any protrusion on sight so no picture would help. It only feels like a hard rope like lump when the finger is pressed to it.
The lump seems part of the under side body of the penis slightly toward the right.
The size of it would be no bigger than half the size of a small pea.
Does this help in confirming the cyst. If it does persist for a week do you think i should see my GP -- what do you feel?

Brief Answer:
peyronie's plaque?

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
Your description sounds as if it could be a disease called peyronie's plaque. This could be a cord-like induration of tissues beneath the skin of penis. It could be painful or painless and maybe associated with curvature on erection.
If there is no erectile dysfunction and no pain or curvature, you could ignore it if required after a consultation with a family physician or a Urologist,, especially if it is not interfering with intercourse, because thus does not have a great medical treatment and we operate only when absolutely necessary in younger men with progressive disease.
There are anecdotal reports of use with drugs like potaba or vitamin E. This probably does no harm, but I have seen only marginal benefit.
Note: Hope the answers resolves your concerns, however for further guidance of skin related queries consult our Dermatologist.Click here to book a consultation
