What Causes Shooting Pain In The Buttock While Treating CIDP?

default
Posted on Fri, 3 Feb 2017
Question: Hi- I am not sure if I pulled a muscle or something else is going on. I have CIDP (chronic Inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy) which is in remission. I have been a little more active as my endurance is getting better. For the past few weeks, I have been getting this shooting pain, localized at the underside of my right buttock (upper thigh). It originates there and is a sharp, tight pain. It almost stops me in motion. I get it mostly when walking and there doesn't seem to be a correlation between being seated for a period of time and it happening. Could I have pulled a muscle?

I should also mention that the CIDP only caused weakness, paresthesia, inflammation in hands and some autonomic anomalies when active which IVIG seemed to tame. I never had neurological pain with it fortunately.

Brief Answer:
Can be muscle spasm or nerve root irritation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
A sharp shooting pain localized at the right buttock can be due to a mild nerve compression at the area or at the level of lower lumbar spine or due to sudden muscle spasms. This can happen due to methylcobalamin deficiency or electrolyte imbalances.
Applying heat and gentle muscle stretching can help in sudden spasms. You can also get a few blood tests done to find out any deficiency so that suitable supplements can be started.
I hope this answers your query.
