Question: My 19 year old daughter at college just called me and said yesterday as she was walking she felt a sharp pain just below her belly button and just to the left of it. It continued to hurt that night especially if she laughed or stretched her back (like arching). Then before bed it went away. Next day it came back and seemed worse after she ate. She said it is also tender to the touch. Also - this may or may not be related but she told me at the end of march she had a period for only 1 day- this has never happened before. She is very regular.

Detailed Answer:
Hi there . I have read your query
Since your daughter had a acute type of pain there are few questions that came in my mind instantaneously that
1. Does she have pain on urination?
2. Was the color of the urine different?
3. Did coughing etc. aggravate the pain?
4. Did she pull some heavy weight?
5. Is there any associated episode of nausea and vomiting with the pain?
Now if she answers the questions the following possibilities are there
1. Could be due to ovarian cysts
2. Or there could a sharp pain due to the obstructed kidney stone
3. Or there are many possibilities that it could be due to urinary tract infection
4. There could be chances of acute intestinal obstruction
5. Or some sort of obstructed hernia
6. Some females also have mid menstrual pain known as mittelschmerz
I can only say that this could be ruled out if she goes to the doctor and get appropriate investigations, that is the urine routine and culture and a scan of the lower abdomen .
In the mean time give her a light diet and lot of fluids to drink.
Take care
