What Causes Sharp Pain Around Navel Button?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Apr 2015
Question: Hi,
I sometimes get abdominal pains but last night experienced it right in the centre of the abdomen about 5cm above the navel button. What could this region correspond to as it appears to be below the stomach. I do have a history of gastritis and acid reflux, stomach hernia. The pain seemed to come after an upset stomach so could it be intestinal (small)?

Thanks.
Hi,

I forgot to mention that the pain is more sharpish than dull and seems centred around a circular area about 2cm diameter in that area directly above the navel button.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Follow the suggestions below....

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

The sharp pain you are feeling around navel button is due to intestinal spasms.

Most probable cause could be viral gastroenteritis that could also alter stomach pH and aggravate gastritis.

I advise to :
- increase water intake
- take antacids and PPIs to stabilize pH of stomach liquid
- avoid foods and drinks that would aggravate your current symptoms
- take antispasmodic drugs to ease the pain

If no improvement within few days or pain would be worse, should consult with GI specialist to rule out appendicitis.

Hope it was of help!

Thanks Dr. Klerida,

I will follow your advice. I forgot to mention that the pain is is somehow connected to the navel button, it's as if it is linked and similar to pressing the navel button at a location 5cm above the real one. Not sure if that's significant.

Thanks,
Regards.

Brief Answer:
The pain is significant if it persist after a couple of days...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

The pain you are experiencing (that is connected to the navel button) is significant and it is most probably related to gastritis. In such a case it will subside within a couple of days.

As I mentioned earlier if the pain increase in intensity or it doesn't subside within a couple of days you should contact a gastroenterologist to exclude appendicitis.

Hope this was of help!
Wish you health!
