Question: What would be the cause of sharp burning sensation at the sternum during and following bowel movements? Never before experienced, follows two rounds of extended stomach flu-like symptoms of vomiting, inability to keep food down, lasting two weeks each and broken by a two week interim of no symptoms.

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Read your history of pain at sternum during and after passing bowel movements.
The obvious cause you have already mentioned, namely vomiting and inability to keep anything down which has occurred two times lasting for two weeks each with a gap of two weeks.
This is sufficient to cause severe esophagitis and is enhanced by increased intra- abdominal pressure during passing of bowel movements.
This causes reflux esophagitis due to lax lower esophageal sphincter.
I would advise you the following:
Get started with a PPI like Omeprazole, antacid and prescription based prokinetic like Domperidone.
Upper GI Endoscopy and consultation with a Gastroenterologist for clinical evaluation and further management.
