What Causes Severe Pain In The Right Arm?

default
Posted on Sat, 18 Mar 2017
Question: I have pain in the right arm near the elbow area, the pain causes difficulty in picking up heavy jars or plates, etc. I first had the pain in my shoulder, and was told that it was due to a calcium build up, and I needed to take therapy, but before I could make an appointment for therapy, the pain moved down into the lower part of my arm, near my elbow. Also, tingling in left hand. Sometime the pain runs down into my right leg as well. Some mornings my fingers are swollen when I awake. Do you know what might cause these problems?

Brief Answer:
Could be postural.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Most probable reason for your symptoms could be postural problem of neck elbow wrist and hand as you may be working on laptop for long time. This can be due to spondylottic changes in neck or tennis elbow also.

Medications like methylcobalamin and analgesics will reduce pain. If pain is severe a neurotropic like pregabalin can be added, you can take them after consulting your orthopedic.

Some exercises which can be done after pain has reduced include- wrist rotation, elbow movement, shoulder rotation, neck rotation, and fist open and close.
You may consult physiotherapist for further guidance. He may start TENS, or ultrasound which is helpful in your case.

Some life style modifications to prevent pain– Take break every 40 min from computer and do some neck rotations, stretches, walk and get back to work. Sit with taking support to your back and neck, and do not watch television constantly.
I will advise you to check your vit B12 and vit D3 levels also.

I hope this answers your query.
