Posted on Wed, 25 Jan 2017
Question: Hello Doc,
I have joint pain (knee) after 6 months of delivery. I got my B12 test done yesterday. value is 1047. I am taking A to Z multivitamins since last 15 days and also vitamin D supplements 60000IU(as my D3 is 25) every week , been 3 weeks now. I am lactating mother. Is excess of B12 causing the join pain ?
Thanks in advance, XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
High B12 is not the cause

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mrs. XXXXXXX

Thank you for posting the question.

I have gone through your medical history in detail and i see that you have high levels of B12. But,this is definitely not responsible for the joint pain.

The knee joint pain that you are experiencing is due to the strain on ligaments due to weight gain and due to relaxin hormone in blood (This hormone makes the joint ligament lax causing stress pain). As long as you are lactating, this hormone remains in your blood.

Once you stop lactating, this hormone secretion will spontaneously stop on its own and hence reduce the pain to a significant extent.

At present, you can use a supportive knee brace or a compression bandage.

Apply local gels like volini, voveran etc followed by hot fomentation.

Take analgesics like paracetamol (Avoid strong analgesics as you are lactating).

Avoid squatting, sitting cross legged or climbing stairs.

I hope this answer was useful.

Feel free to ask me any doubts that you may have.

Thank you.

Best wishes.
