What Causes Severe Edema After Taking Levaquin?
Question: My 94 year old Aunt was given 1500 mg of Levaquin (antibiotic) through IV over 5 days in the hospital for a minor UT infection. She suddenly developed a severe edema, at least 50 pounds of fluid, in her arms and legs along with acute muscle/joint pain and shortness of breath. She just went in for an examine and this what happened. They discharge her after 6 days in this condition. Is there a way to detox Levaquin from the body?
Now, after 10 days the edema and other symptoms won't go away. Please help. ....XXXX

Brief Answer:
The drug might no longer be in the system. The aftereffects may take a while
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. It seems that she has been allergic to Levaquin. The antibiotic should have been completely eliminated in the last 6 days and does not need any further detox. But the reaction it has caused, may persist for some time and you need to give some time for the body to readjust. As of now, management would be symptomatic. Let me know what treatment she is receiving and I would guide you accordingly. Also let me know her blood pressure.
Let me know if I could help further.
