What Causes Right Sided Pain On The Face And Near The Ears?

default
Posted on Wed, 7 Sep 2016
Question: For the past two months I've woken up to a pain along the right side of my face, mostly around my ear. After the morning moves on the pain dissolves. Last night I was aware of a nerve running from my right temple to my nose, not painful, but disconcerting. Are these symptoms cause for concern?

Brief Answer:
Read below.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

I do not think those symptoms are suggestive of stroke, stroke usually presents with symptoms of neurological deficits such as weakness or numbness of the body on one side, speech problems, visual symptoms, balance and coordination issues etc. Headache may be an accompanying symptom at the beginning but it subsides gradually and doesn't last for two months. So I do not think we are dealing with a life threatening issue.

One possibility is dysfunction of the temporo-mandibular joint, the joint between the mandible and the skull which like other joints can have arthritic changes. The fact it disappears by moving supports that.

One other possibility is a dental issue on that side which can also justify the symptoms. So a visit by the dentist (or can check initially with your primary physician) is recommended for both the above conditions.

One other possibility might be an ear or maxillary sinus infection, but I would consider it less likely as for two months should have produced other symptoms as well.

I remian at your disposal for further questions.
