What Causes Regular Pain In Palm And Fingers After Treating Broken Forearm?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Sep 2015
Question: hi doctor

3 weeks back I fell down from my bike and broke my Forearm. Ulna and radius both bones were fractured. I got admitted to the hospital and they have done the surgery. It was not an open fracture. They had to insert to plates for support and I was on medication since then. I am able to make some movements in my arm now ad doing soft ball exercise what my doctor told me.
Problem is, I am not able to straight my hand as it was due to pain and shaking. Another issue is I have regular pain in my palm and fingers for last 15 days. I never got my palm and fingers hurt while accident but not sure why it is paining badly since 15 days. Another big issue is that my Biceps size has been reduced drastically. It is quite visible that I have lost weight on this hand after the surgery. is it common?
Please suggest?

Brief Answer:
It will heal after exercise.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
After the surgery the hand and arm is immobilized in plaster for proper healing. This causes lack of exercise - thus reduction in the muscle mass of biceps and the joint stiffness. After the plaster is removed, with the help of regular physiotherapy you will be able to completely straighten your forearm. The pain in the hand will also gradually reduce with pain killers and a hot compress.
You will have to do a regular exercise after complete healing to get back the lost muscle mass. All these problems are reversible with p[roper exercise.
I hope this answers your query.

there was no plaster on it Doctor. it is steel plate inside and only bandage on stitches. Is the palm and finger pain also due to that though it was never hurt in the accident.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to soft tissue swelling.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The palm and finger pain can be due to swelling of soft tissue on the tendons or nerves. This will subside with mild pain killers and in next 2-3 weeks as the soft tissue around the fracture site heals. Adding calcium supplements to your diet will also help.
Hope my answer is helpful.
