What Causes Radiating Pain In The Shoulder And Neck?

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Jul 2016
Question: Yes Please. I have been experiencing mild neck and shoulder pain for the past few months. I have been seeing an physiotherapist in the last three weeks. He has given me messages and therapy on my neck and shoulder for six sessions. Now, after six sessions of therapy, i am in more pain than before and it is radiating upward toward my head hence, now I also have a headaches. What could be the cause of my neck and shoulder pain? Is it the soft tissues, mussels, tendons, ligaments? Or could it be a degenerative arthritis, or degenerative disc disease, herniated disc , pinched nerve, or bursitis. How can I pin point the the underlying cause of my pain?

Brief Answer:
Needs MRI scan for diagnosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain in the shoulder and neck that is radiating to the head can be due to cervical spondylosis, shoulder impingement syndrome, tendonitis or an injury to the rotator cuff. All these possibilities need to be ruled out after an MRI scan of the neck and shoulder.
Right now the painful area needs a rest for healing. After the pain and inflammation subsides then only physiotherapy is recommended. You need to consult an orthopedician for proper investigations and an MRI scan of the area. Do get some oral muscle relaxants prescribed for symptomatic relief till then.
I hope this answers your query.
